FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Minneapolis Music Community to Gather for Justice Tribute Honoring Gun Violence Victim Dave Velk
St Louis Park, MN — November 1, 2026 — Local musicians, community members, and advocates will gather this week to honor the memory of beloved local musician Dave Velk (Veljkovich) and renew public calls for justice following his death in 2023.
The advocacy and memorial event, titled "What Happened to Dave Velk?", will take place on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at The Coven in St. Louis Park (6726 Walker St, St Louis Park, MN 55426).
Dave Velk, a central figure in the vibrant Minneapolis music scene, was killed in 2023 during an apparent home invasion. The case has not been presented for consideration of charges because it remains an open investigation with the Minneapolis Police Department. Three years later, his family, friends, and community continue to seek definitive answers, calling on law enforcement and elected officials to ensure justice is served.
Organized by Sarah Steffen, MPH of DancingFish Events, the evening will feature a blend of musical and spoken tributes celebrating Velk’s life, artistry, and lasting impact on the local arts community. The event serves as both a remembrance of a lost talent and a public forum to address ongoing concerns regarding gun violence in the Twin Cities.
"I am still seeking answers to one big question: What happened to Dave Velk?" said organizer Sarah Steffen. "We are inviting Dave's community, the press, elected officials, and any citizens concerned about gun violence to stand with us, remember his music, and renew our collective commitment to asking for justice." Steffen will be joined by Velk’s inner circle and band members, who will be playing a set in tribute to Dave.
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to listen to and share Velk's music, which remains available across major streaming platforms, to keep his artistic legacy alive. For anyone with information relevant to the case, please contact the Police Department or CrimeStoppers.
